During the week of May 15, secondary schools within the City of Kawartha Lakes competed against each other to see who could bring in the most donations of new and clean used socks.
The first-ever Sock Cup Challenge was spearheaded by I.E. Weldon Secondary School’s (IEWSS) Weldon Green Advocates, who invited Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LVCI) and Fenelon Falls Secondary School to get involved as a way to bring back fun-filled and competitive school spirit, all while supporting going green and giving old socks a new life by eliminating the need for new materials.
Throughout the week, students were encouraged to bring in clean socks in any condition, brand, or size. At the end of the week, the socks at each school were counted and then divided by the number of students.
In total, all three schools collected around 7,500 socks! In the end, LCVI was named champions and was awarded bragging rights and the Sock Cup Challenge trophy, which was created by the IEWSS Tech Department.
“Through this initiative, I am hoping students will be inspired by knowing that individuals can make a difference, but a large group working together makes an even larger difference,” explained IEWSS teacher, Julie Hendren.
“It is a lot of fun doing challenges like this against other schools. It is for an excellent cause and it has a positive impact on school spirit,” said an LCVI student. “We look forward to defending the title next year.”
IEWSS plans to donate the socks to a textile recycling organization.
