On May 15 to 17, the Monck Public School (MPS) Concert Band and Jazz Band were invited to Niagara Falls to compete at the MusicFest Canada, an annual national event that brings together young musicians from all over the country to perform.
The school’s Concert Band is made up of 60 Grade 7 and 8 students and the Jazz Band is made up of 25 Grade 7 and 8 students. Over the three days, the bands performed three pieces in their categories for adjudicators, being judged on their control of the elements of music and the quality of the performance.
In the end, the Concert Band placed silver in the Elementary Concert Band category, and the Jazz Band placed gold in the Elementary Jazz Ensemble category.
“Many organizations within the community helped support this trip,” explained MPS music teacher, Karen Lonsdale. “We wouldn’t have been able to do it without them. We are truly grateful for their support.”
To acknowledge the students’ accomplishments, the two bands will perform for their families at the Rene M. Caisse Memorial Theatre in the coming weeks. At the end of the school year, they will also enjoy a trip to Canada’s Wonderland, where they will perform at the park’s Festival of Music.
